CFITSIO files

Hi,
I have tried to open .fits files with emacs to modify data. When I open files, I see data in a strange order (in diagonal lines) and I don't know how to manage those. So my question: there is a specific editor to modify .fits files or not?

P.S.: I used also vim but I don't succeed in scrolling the file

Also, Mathematica manages quite well with fits files :)
