Conference ''100 Years of Relativity'' (São Paulo, Brazil)

Post by Raul Abramo » March 18 2005

I am pasting below the First Announcement for the conference "100 Years of Relativity", which is really a Cosmology conference. It will take place
in São Paulo (Brazil) on Aug 22-24th, 2005.

You can find more information about São Paulo and the Conference, and register for it, on the website:

First announcement of the Conference

"100 Years of Relativity"
-------------------------

São Paulo (Brazil)
August 22-24, 2005

As part of the world-wide festivities of the centennial of Einstein's
"Annus Mirabilis", the conference "100 Years of Relativity" will
commemorate Einstein's most cherished legacy: the modern theories
of Relativity and Cosmology.

The main thrust of the conference is classical and quantum aspects of
Gravitation and Cosmology - theoretical as well as experimental. A
non-exhaustive list includes black holes, quantum and semi-classical
gravity, exact solutions of GR, gravity waves, cosmic microwave
background, structure formation, weak/strong lensing, gamma-ray
bursts, high-energy cosmic rays, dark matter and dark energy.

All those interested should register before 31 May using the
conference site:

http://www.if.usp.br/100years

We expect morning and afternoon lectures by invited speakers as well
as some paralell sessions and posters. We have a small amount of
financial support also for those accepted for talks in paralell sessions
and posters, which include local expenses at a sharing basis, as well
a quite limited amount of travel expenses. When applying please
indicate whether financial support is needed.

Local Organizing Commitee:

E. Abdalla (USP) R. Abramo (USP)
J. Lima (USP) G. Matsas (IFT/UNESP)
M. Ribeiro (UFRJ) A. Saa (UNICAMP)

International Advisory Board:

R. Brandenberger (McGill) E. Gunzig (Brussels)
P. Letelier (UNICAMP) V. Mukhanov (Munich)
M. Novello (CBPF) S. Randjbar-daemi (ICTP)
W. Unruh (UBC) E. Witten (IAS)

Hotel Information
-----------------

Four Hotels have been selected for the Conference. They are located
near Avenida Paulista, quite representative of the city. We expect the
lectures to be delivered in the theater of the São Paulo Museum of
Art (MASP), located at Avenida Paulista, within walking distance
from the Hotels.

The selected Hotels are (in growing price range):

Royal Life Flat Service
La Residence
Matiz The Universe
Paulista Wall Street

Their prices range from R$ 60.00 to R$ 90.00 (Single), R$ 60.00 to
R$ 110.00 (Double), from the cheapest (Royal Life) to the most
expensive (Paulista Wall Street). The exchange rate to R$ ("Real",
sing., "reais", pl.) fluctuates, but it usually stays close to U$ 1.00
=~ R$ 2.70, and Euro 1.00 =~ R$ 3.60 .

All hotels have at least ethernet hook-ups in all rooms and WiFi in
the lobbies. Both The Universe and Paulista Wall Street also have
WiFi internet connections in the rooms.

By registering in our website and choosing one of these hotels we
will automatically make a reservation in your name, on the hotel of
your choice (you do NOT need to connect the hotel individually.)
Please note that the reservation will be held only until 8pm on Aug.
21st. If you plan to arrive at a later date, you should contact the
Conference organizers by e-mail:

Eating in São Paulo
-------------------

São Paulo is very well served in terms of food. Those interested
in sophisticated and expensive dinners can go to Massimo (Al. Santos,
paralell to Paulista) or Fasano (rua Fasano), where you can spend circa
R$ 250 for a dinner with wine. For sophisticated but not extorsive
dinners, you can try Figueira (Haddock Lobo, perpendicular to
Paulista), Bargaço or Antiquarius (both in Al. Lorena). In the region
of Haddock Lobo to the South, one finds further restaurants not
that expensive, but still in the style of some sophistication.

At Al. Santos financially prudent visitors can find a good meal for a
range from R$ 20 - 50, some even with belly dance included (at
Al. Santos every day, or at Bela Cintra on thursday evenings). At
Rascal's (still at Al. Santos) one finds the best salad bar in town for
vegetarians, including pasta for around R$ 50.

In case you want to poison yourself with fast food there are still plenty
of opportunities, as everywhere in this crazy world, but you will have
to ask for yourself, for we are not going to be responsible for your
ill health, or for supporting world's worst garbage.

Other Touristic Information
---------------------------

São Paulo is not such a touristic city, but there are some places
worth visiting. You can visit "Terraço Itália", a top floor restaurant with
a magnificent view of São Paulo, and the Italian district (Bexiga) now
known for its music and still more food. Downtown, where you can go
safely (but carefully) during the daytime you can visit the Cathedral
(Sé) and, nearby, the first building constructed in 16th century (Pátio
do Colégio). Another interesting site, also near the old center of town,
is the Mercado Municipal, which has been recently renewed. Also
popular with tourists and locals is the oriental district, Liberdade (easy
to reach by Metro from Av. Paulista).

Some museums are worthwhile: MASP (where the conference is
housed), the Modern Art Museum located inside the city's main park
(Ibirapuera), the Museum of Comtemporary Art (at the University of
São Paulo), the Pinacoteca and the Museum of Sacred Art near Estação
da Luz, and the History Museum at Ipiranga. In the region around Av.
Paulista you will also find many art galleries and expositions, generally
held by banks as well as a few old houses from the Coffee Barons
(who themselves disappeared after 1929.)
