Tenure Track Position in Computational Astrophysics - Univer

Post by Brad Gibson » August 31 2006

The Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Central Lancashire seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to the title of RCUK Academic Fellow, within the area of Computational Cosmology and Galaxy Formation. Upon completion of this highly prestigious 5-year appointment, subject to the standard probationary period, the Fellow will be appointed to a permanent faculty position within the University. The successful Fellow will join one of the UK's most vibrant, rapidly expanding, collaborative, and sociable, astrophysical research institutes.

Expertise in modeling the formation and evolution of (a) the First Objects, (b) the chemical and energetic feedback of these Objects and their galactic progeny to the Cosmic Web, and or (c) the chemodynamical assembly histories of galaxies and clusters, is highly desirable. The Fellow should benefit from collaborative links with our newly-appointed Chair in Theoretical Astrophysics, Prof Brad Gibson, and the Centre's leadership role in the UK Southern African Large Telescope Consortium. The Fellow will be free to make extensive use of the University's dedicated SGI Altix 3700 High Performance Computing Facility, and is eligible to apply for time on the UK's world-leading suite of national High Performance Computational facilities. Ample opportunity exists to steer the University's future investment in High Performance Computing.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 11 September 2006. Applicants should submit a copy of their CV, list of publications, research interests, and the contact details for three referees, along with the application form available here; please quote reference number 163A-09-06 (RCUK Academic Fellow). We anticipate conducting interviews in early-October 2006, with an anticipated start-date as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be made at the University's Senior Lecturer scale, subject to negotiation.

The Centre for Astrophysics is located on the University's main campus, on a pleasant site in the city centre of Preston, nestled on the edge of the beautiful Ribble Valley and the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Lake District, Peak District, and Yorkshire Dales are all within an hour, and the city is renowned for its outstanding parks and green spaces, as well as its vibrant pub and club scene. Both Manchester and Liverpool are within 45 minutes' reach.[/url]
