THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES
SCHOOL OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY
JODRELL BANK OBSERVATORY

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Salary £24,886 per annum (REF: EPS/143/06)

A postdoctoral position is available to work on the analysis of the Galactic emission in the data from ESA's Planck spacecraft, to be launched in February 2008. The work will particularly focus on low-frequency foregrounds including synchrotron, free-free, and 'anomalous' dust emission, with an emphasis on polarization. The aim is both to accurately model and remove the foreground emission, to allow precise measurement of the polarized CMB, and also to exploit the data to study the Galactic magnetic field and the interstellar medium.

Prior to launch, the PDRA will take part in preparations for the analysis, including both the development of realistic models of the emission and new ground-based surveys to supplement the Planck data itself, including the GALFACTS survey of polarization at 1.4 GHz with Arecibo.
