CMB Postdoc position in Tenerife

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife) invites applications for ONE Postdoctoral Position to work on the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background data from the Very Small Array (VSA, see http://www.iac.es/project/cmb/). Major research topics will be primordial power spectrum at high multipoles, non-Gaussianity studies, and SZ effect in clusters and superclusters.

The candidate may also participate in the other research activities of the CMB group at Tenerife. Mainly, the analisis of the anomalous microwave emission (COSMOSOMAS Experiment), and the preparatory science for the scientific exploitation of the Planck mission, where the group is contributing with the development of the Radiometer Electronics Box Assembly (REBA) of the LFI instrument and DPC activities.

Tasks.
The selected candidate will work at the central headquarters of the IAC in La Laguna (Tenerife), although short- and medium-term stays are envisaged at Cavendish Laboratory of the University of Cambridge and in the Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory (UK), which are partners in the VSA project. The CMB group has funding resources to cover these working visits, as well as the candidate attendance to scientific meetings and conferences.

Her/his tasks will include:
- The development of software for analysis of VSA data;
- The development of techniques for the analysis of the statistical properties of the CMB anisotropies

Applicants should have a PhD in Physics/Astrophysics. In addition to initiative and research capacity, the following will be particularly valued:
- Experience in the simulation and analysis of data from cosmic microwave background experiments;
- Expertise in the physics of the early Universe and the CMB;
- Knowledge of programming languages.

The selected candidates must have their PhD at the moment of signing the contract which will be before march 2006.


Remuneration.
The yearly salary will be 29.097 Euros, subject to up to 33% tax and Social Security deductions. The post will last for two years,. Medical insurance under the Spanish Health Service will be provided and will include cover for accompanying partner and children.

Contract.
Applicants who are citizen from countries not belonging to the European Union have to bear in mind that they will not be allowed to sign any contract with the IAC until they have the compulsory documentation required to live and work in Spain (Visa, Living Licence and Exception of the Working Licence) approved.

Duration. Up to a maximum of two years, subject to annual review.

- Brief report on their research/technical activity and a statement concerning their suitability for the position;
- PhD Degree (Photocopy);

- At least two letters of recommendation must be sent directly from active researchers familiar with the candidates' previous experience, to the Secretariat of the Research Division IAC (electronic format is preferred).
Applicants who prepared their thesis at the IAC have to present accreditations of Complementary Training at other research centres, as stated under point 2 of the official announcement (this period should be either 1 continuous year or 18 accumulated months).
