BAORadio/FAN : 21 cm Cosmology and Dark Energy (France)
Université Paris Sud and Observatoire de Paris seek to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to work on 21 cm Cosmology. The LAL (Univ. Paris Sud, Orsay) and IRFU (CEA, Saclay) have developed, in collaboration with Observatoire de Paris (GEPI and Nancay radio observatory) a complete system for signal sampling and processing, suitable for 21 cm wide band digital interferometry. This system is being used for characterizing the Pittsburgh cylindrical prototype reflectors (CRT/BAORadio), as well as with the NRT, the large radio telescope at Nancay, for the FAN (Focal Array at Nancay) prototype and the HI in cluster program. Our aim is to build, in collaboration with our international partners, a radio instrument capable of mapping the 3D distribution of the atomic hydrogen (HI) up to z <= 3.
The successful applicant will work with the two teams, Dark Energy/BAO team at LAL and FAN team at GEPI/Nan??ay. He or she would have to contribute to at least two of the following subjects:
  • FAN data analysis and beam synthesis
  • Data analysis and interpretation for the HI in cluster program with NRT (Amas@Nancay)
  • Separation of the radio foreground and the cosmological HI signal
  • Analysis of the Pittsburgh or Nan??ay test interferometer observations
The appointment would be for two years, starting fall 2011. Applicants are expected to hold a PhD (Doctorate) in Physics or Astronomy and be familiar with data analysis and interpretation in astrophysics and Cosmology. The knowledge of radio astronomy observation or data reduction methods, or clusters astrophysics would also be appreciated.
Candidates should send their application, including a cover letter, CV with publication list, a brief description of their past research work and future research interests, as well as three recommendation letters by e-mail to
R. Ansari and J.M. Martin, with copy to Mrs Geneviève Gilbert before end of march 2011
