COSMOLOGY/ GALAXY EVOLUTION RESEARCH FELLOWS AND POSTDOC AT

Post by Roy Maartens » October 18 2010

The Astronomy and Cosmology group at the University of the Western Cape is investing in growth and has been joined by Roy Maartens, supported by a SKA Research Chair, and Matt Jarvis, who holds an SKA visiting research professorship. Research is focused on galaxy evolution and cosmology and includes theory, simulations and observations. The group, which includes Catherine Cress, Andreas Faltenbacher and Russell Johnston, has access to facilities at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), including the 10m-class SALT, and to data from VISTA , Herschel, LOFAR and, in the future, DES, MeerKAT and ASKAP (the South African and Australian SKA pathfinders). The group also uses facilities at the SA Centre for High Performance Computing.

The UWC group (uwcastro.org), together with the ACGC at the University of Cape Town (www.acgc.uct.ac.za), the SAAO (www.saao.ac.za) and the AIMS Research Centre cosmology group (cosmoaims.wordpress.com), offer an active programme of seminars, lectures and workshops. We also have strong international links, in particular to the Institute of Cosmology & Gravitation in Portsmouth and the University of Hertfordshire, as well as the global SKA community.

We are seeking to appoint 2 senior research fellows (3+2 years), and a postdoctoral researcher (2+1 years) to help build our growing research programme. In particular, we are aiming to develop world-class research in the exploitation of radio data, combined with simulations and other multiwavelength data sets, for cosmology and galaxy evolution studies. The MeerKAT telescope provides a strong platform for this.

Applicants should email a CV and statement of research interests (< 3 pages) and arrange for three recommendation letters to be emailed to [Log in to view email]. The deadline for applications is 31 October but late applications will be considered until the posts are filled.
