Eichler proposes that hyperflares from soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) can be important in production of ultra high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR).

It was suggested (astro-ph/0502391) that galaxies with high supernova rate like Arp 299 and NGC 3256 can be the most important hosts of young SGRs in the local (<50 Mpc) universe.

Taking this all together it is interesting to remember that exactly the same two galaxies were discussed (astro-ph/0308532, astro-ph/0203337) as sources of UHECR (however, this result was critisized).
