[astro-ph/0504452] Ultrahigh Energy Activity in Giant Magnetar Outbursts

Authors:  David Eichler
Abstract:  The recent superflare of 27 December 2004 from the magnetar SGR 1806-20 was the brightest extrasolar flash ever recorded in the modern era. The chances for seeing exotic ultrahigh energy (UHE) radiation - neutrons, neutrinos, gamma rays and charged cosmic rays - from it are far better from an energetic point of view than from cosmological gamma ray bursts (GRBs). The chances for detecting the various components are discussed in light of recent data from the 27 December event.

[astro-ph/0504452] Ultrahigh Energy Activity in Giant Magnet

Post by Sergei Popov » June 08 2005

Eichler proposes that hyperflares from soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) can be important in production of ultra high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR).

It was suggested (astro-ph/0502391) that galaxies with high supernova rate like Arp 299 and NGC 3256 can be the most important hosts of young SGRs in the local (<50 Mpc) universe.

Taking this all together it is interesting to remember that exactly the same two galaxies were discussed (astro-ph/0308532, astro-ph/0203337) as sources of UHECR (however, this result was critisized).
