I wouldn't be surprised. In Contaldi et al. the combination of the TT and cosmic shear also preferred a "high" value, but now we have a "slightly" better estimate of the source redshift distribution and I think the lensing \sigma_8 will come down a little, closer to 0.75-0.8 or so,
which would also favour a lower optical depth.

Ehi, it seems that the rumour about the cosmic string was true in some way !
Look at today's astro-ph/0503120 ! The evidence is really small but the result is
definilty interesting !
