Hi,
Can anybody tell me whether I can use octave for plotting 2D and 3D plots in
place of matlab? If yes, then what do I need to do?

Certainly you can. Go to: http://www.octave.org/ and read the docs and you'll find:

http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/doc/ ... l-Plotting

If you cannot find answers in the documentation or in the FAQ, you can ask for help on the mailing list:
