Dark energy definition in equations_ppf

Hi all,
I have a sort of dumb question! I am soory if that has already been discussed. I cannot get a clear idea.
My question is:
While using spline and cubicsplint for [math] and [math] why [math] is used and not '[math]'. We need to define functions [math] and [math].
If I define [math] and [math] with '[math]' instead of '[math]' in spline and cubicsplint, how will that cause problem?
Do we need to define [math] and [math]? I think not!
Please help. Many many thanks in advance.
Best
