Post-doc(s) in Cosmology at Cape Town

Post by Bruce Bassett » April 01 2006

Postdoctoral Research Associate(s) in Cosmology

2-year Fixed Term

General Relativity and Cosmology Group, University of Cape Town

Closing Date: 15 May 2006

The General Relativity and Cosmology Group in the Department of
Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town is
advertising a 2-year NRF-funded postdoctoral research associate in
cosmology. In addition we may have funds for further post-doctoral
positions. Applications will be kept on file and automatically considered for
future positions.

We seek an appointee to work in the area of linear and non-linear
cosmological perturbation theory, CMB anisotropies and dark energy. Preference will be given to candidates with a working knowledge of commonly used CMB codes (CAMB, CMBFAST, CMBEASY).

The successful candidate for the first postition will work as part of a project funded through an international bilateral agreement with Italy, involving
scientists from University of Naples "Federico II".

The UCT cosmology group currently has four permanent staff members,
Bruce Bassett, Chris Clarkson (From July 2006), Peter Dunsby, Charles Hellaby and Jeff Murugan
(From July 2006), three postdocs and four PhD students. In addition George Ellis is an Emeritus Professor in the group.

The group's research interests include inhomogeneous cosmology,
evolution and properties of inhomogeneities, dark energy, large cosmological surveys, relating observations to cosmological models, non-linear perturbation theory, CMB anisotropies, dynamics of cosmological models, generalised gravity theories, braneworlds, models of quintessence, applications of plasma physics to astrophysics and cosmology, and aspects of string theory with emphasis on the AdS/CFT correspondence.

The successful candidate will be able to take part in cosmology surveys with SALT, the 10m class South African optical telescope (South African astronomers have 33% of observing time, see http://www.salt.ac.za). In addition the candidate will have access to the national Centre for High Performance Computing in Cape Town.

Members of the group are also involved in the SDSS Supernova Survey and are part of the Gemini Wide-Field Multi-Object Spectrograph (WFMOS) team.

The starting date is October 1 2006, or as soon as possible. Starting dates for future post-docs will depend on confirmation of funds.

For further information about this position, contact Peter Dunsby
([Log in to view email]). Informal enquiries about other research
opportunities in the group should be made to Bruce Bassett([Log in to view email]), Charles Hellaby ([Log in to view email]),
Jeffery Murugan ([Log in to view email]) and Chris Clarkson
([Log in to view email]).

Remuneration will afford a comfortable standard of living, includes a
return ticket, and funding towards research related travel.
