2year PostDoc position in Astronomy + Machine Learning

Post by Emille Ishida » March 17 2018

We invite applications for a 2-years post-doctoral researcher position in the interface between astronomy and machine learning. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the position, candidates with a background in either astronomy/astrophysics, computer science or statistics will be equally considered. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Emille Ishida in the CNRS-MOMENTUM project “Adaptive Learning for Large Scale Sky Surveysâ€.

The project is focused on the development of machine learning techniques for real time classification of variable astronomical sources in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in adaptive learning algorithms, statistical modelling for big data and/or observational astronomy. The successful candidate is encouraged to conduct independent research in related areas.

The LSST group at Université Clermont-Auvergne is deeply involved in the analysis of Type Ia supernovae from the Nearby Supernova Factory and in LSST, where we focus in all aspects of its supernova cosmology pipeline. The group also has an interdisciplinary collaboration with IT research on big data applied to astrophysics and plays a leading role in the activities of the Cosmostatistics Initiative (COIN).

Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent qualification in astronomy/astrophysics, computer science, statistics or related fields, have an excellent publication track record in their field and have demonstrated their interest for conducting interdisciplinary research.

The nominal starting date is 1 September 2018. The contract offers an extensive support covering all the travel expenses required for the development of the project (meetings, workshops, collaborations, etc.). The successful candidate will have no teaching duties.

Applicants should provide a cover letter addressing the above selection criteria and highlighting computer skills (1 page); a CV, research statement (2 pages) , a list of publications and arrange for 2 letters of recommendation.

The documentation should be sent to via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/10931 no later than 15 April 2018 for full consideration.

Inquires are welcome and should be sent to Dr. Emille E. O. Ishida < [Log in to view email] >.[/url]
