Data Science Postdoctoral Fellowship at the SKA / astro-ph

Post by Bruce Bassett » February 11 2018

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Science with the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), Cape Town

SALARY: R370,000 per annum, Tax Free

DURATION: 3 years

START DATE: Between 1 June and 1 December 2018

The Data Science group at SARAO, in collaboration with the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), has an exciting postdoctoral opportunity for a dynamic candidate interested in applying machine learning and Bayesian inference to massive datasets. The MeerKAT telescope is a precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and will be commissioned in 2018, delivering astronomical datasets in the petabyte range in addition to a huge amount of streaming IoT sensor data from the 64 antennae. For more general information about MeerKAT please see: http://www.ska.ac.za/.

The SARAO data science group is rapidly growing and working on a variety of problems with the aim of improving MeerKAT performance including supervised, unsupervised and active learning, anomaly detection, visualisation and inference. The successful candidate will be energetic, curious, flexible and will work closely with the rest of the data science team, as well as the machine learning group at AIMS (www.aims.ac.za) and other data science groups in the Western Cape.

REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants should have:

* PhD in physics, statistics, computer science or a related field, (or shortly expect to receive the PhD)

* Record of excellence in research

* Demonstrable skills in the fields of data science, machine learning and/or Bayesian statistics

* Strong programming skills in python

* Good time management and team working skills

* Good communication skills in English, both oral and written

APPLICATIONS: Please send a CV, a list of publications, a motivation letter and contact information for three references, in a single PDF file, to [Log in to view email]. Applicants with queries are welcome to contact Professor Bruce Bassett at the same address.

DEADLINE: 1 April 2018

The SARAO Data Science group is based in Cape Town, widely considered one of the most beautiful and affordable cities in the world. See e.g. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/ ... 17-cities/
