Postdoctoral fellowships at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

Post by H. Cynthia Chiang » June 02 2014

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is offering the following postdoctoral fellowships in astrophysics and cosmology:

---
(1) Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Astrophysics & Cosmology

The Astrophysics and Cosmology Research Unit (ACRU) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal invites applications for postdoctoral research fellowships to work in the areas of instrumentation, computational astrophysics, extragalactic astronomy, and cosmology.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work on research projects in collaboration with ACRU faculty members, who have research interests in the areas of galaxy evolution, clusters of galaxies, the cosmic microwave background, and theoretical cosmology. ACRU members are involved in many international projects including the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT; and its successor, ACTPol); the C-band All Sky Survey (C-BASS); various MeerKAT surveys; the Precision Array to Probe the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER); Planck; SPIDER; the South Pole Telescope polarimeter (SPTpol); and the XMM Cluster Survey. In addition, ACRU will participate in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project through the South African consortium. UKZN is also in the process of building an HPC facility. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to these efforts, as well as being encouraged to also develop their own independent research.

The positions are for two years with the possibility of extension to three years. Starting dates are negotiable and begin from September 2014. A generous allowance will be provided for international travel and research expenses.

Applicants should e-mail a curriculum vitae, brief statement of their research interests, list of publications, and arrange to have three letters of reference e-mailed to Dr. H. Cynthia Chiang ([Log in to view email]) by June 30 2014 for full consideration. Note that applicants should have obtained their PhD degree within the last three years.

(2) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Millimetre-Wavelength Instrumentation & Cosmology

The Astrophysics and Cosmology Research Unit (ACRU) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal is offering a postdoctoral research position in the area of observational cosmology.

We seek highly qualified candidates to work on instrumentation and data analysis for millimetre-wavelength experiments with a focus on cosmic microwave background polarimetry. The selected applicant will have opportunities to join collaborations that include but are not limited to SPIDER and the South Pole Telescope. Participation in these projects will involve a combination of microwave hardware design and integration, instrument characterisation, and analysing large data sets.

The position is for two years with the possibility of extension to three years. The starting date is negotiable, and the position can begin as early as September 2014. A generous allowance will be provided for international travel and research expenses.

Applicants should e-mail a curriculum vitae, brief statement of their research interests, list of publications, and arrange to have three letters of reference e-mailed to Dr. H. Cynthia Chiang ([Log in to view email]) by June 30, 2014 for full consideration. Note that applicants should have obtained their PhD degree within the last three years.
