Two post-doctoral positions will be available in 2014 at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera (OA-Brera) of INAF, within the “DARKLIGHT” cosmology group led by Dr. Luigi Guzzo and funded by a 5-year ERC Advanced Research Grant. The goal of the program is to develop new techniques and models to extract cosmological information from current and future galaxy redshift surveys, with particular focus on modelling redshift-space distortions to obtain unbiased estimates of the growth rate of structure. Novel methods are then tested on numerical simulations and applied to new redshift survey data, in particular from the VIPERS survey currently nearing completion with the ESO VLT. The two available positions are focused on the combination of galaxy clustering with other cosmological probes, like CMB, galaxy clusters and weak gravitational lensing. Specific interest and expertise in these areas, both experimental and theoretical, will be considered as an asset. However, in general any researcher with a strong background, either experimental or theoretical, in large-scale structure and cosmology is encouraged to apply. Informal enquiries are welcome, writing to [Log in to view email] for scientific questions or [Log in to view email] for practical information on the application. Info on the DARKLIGHT project can also be found on

The DARKLIGHT group currently includes three postdocs and two PhD students funded by the same program. In addition, the broader OAB cosmology group includes one further Euclid postdoctoral fellow working on modified gravity and clustering and recently expanded further, with the arrival of an INAF Fellow working in numerical simulations, Dr. Carmelita Carbone, and the permanent hire of a new faculty member in theoretical cosmology, Dr. Emiliano Sefusatti. DARKLIGHT fellows also benefit of interaction with other members of the VIPERS and Euclid collaborations, of which OA-Brera is a leading participant, as well as with other PhD and Master students from the nearby Universities of the Milan area. OA-Brera is also home to world-leading groups in high-energy astrophysics and astronomical technologies (X-ray optics and optical instrumentation). The whole group is hosted in a recently renovated and dedicated building within the Merate premises of the Observatory, near Milan. Merate is at the centre of a very liveable area, only 15 min from beautiful Como Lake to the North and 30 min from Milan vibrant activity and attractions to the South.

The fellowships are renewable for up to three years, depending on performances, and are endowed with personal computing facilities and a generous travel budget. A recently acquired 96-core cluster is also available for the members of the group. Details on salary and benefits are given in the official INAF announcement (see Starting of appointment is foreseen between May and October 2014, but an early start (after February 2014) can be also considered.

Interested individuals should apply following the instructions and using the application form provided at the indicated web page. Deadline for applications is January 15, 2014. Please quote reference "DARKLIGHT Fellowship" on all correspondence.
