Postdoc position in Observational Cosmology and instrumentat

Post by Michel Piat » June 04 2012

The precise measurement of the CMB polarisation is one of the challenges of observational cosmology. In this perspective, the international QUBIC experiment (Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) will use bolometers cooled at very low temperatures within an interferometer scheme to observe the CMB polarization from the Concordia station in Antarctica. Funding for the first QUBIC module has just been awarded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the first light is planned for end the end 2013.

In this context, we are looking for a postdoctoral position for a one-year contract (renewable) to participate to the integration and testing of the detection chain. The candidate must provide proof of skills, knowledge and experience in the field of ultra low noise radiation detection at very low temperatures. The candidate will be based at APC (Université Paris Diderot) in Paris in the millimeter instrumentation laboratory, which has various cryogenic tests and characterisation set-up.

The candidate will have the following missions:
• The implementation of the cryogenic test set-up in collaboration with the QUBIC team QUBIC,
• The characterization of QUBIC cryogenic superconducting detectors and associated readout electronics in the test set-up,
• The integration and testing of the detectors in the QUBIC instrument, both in the laboratory and on the observation site (Dome C, Antarctica).

Applicants should submit an application letter, curriculum vitae and arrange for 2 reference letters. This position is expected to start as soon as possible. Full consideration will be given to applications received by July 1st 2012. The position includes the full access to the French healthcare system and 45 days of vacation/year.
