Postdoc position in Radio Weak Lensing at the University of

Post by Michael Brown » December 12 2011

The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in the extragalactic and observational cosmology group. The starting date is 1st April 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Michael Brown on the development and application of new techniques for performing weak gravitational lensing analyses of deep, wide-field sky surveys using powerful new radio telescopes.

The University of Manchester operates the UK’s next-generation radio facility, e-MERLIN on behalf of STFC. The Manchester cosmology group is leading SuperCLASS - a novel radio weak lensing survey of a supercluster of galaxies to be performed with e-MERLIN. We are looking for a PDRA who is an expert in weak lensing data analysis and/or radio interferometric techniques, but applications based on experience of other aspects of radio astronomy or weak lensing science are also welcome. The post-holder will be based at the University of Manchester and will be expected to play a leading role in developing and applying lensing techniques for analysing the SuperCLASS data. The group is also involved with radio surveys using the MeerKAT telescope and we are playing a leading role in preparations for the Square Kilometre Array. There are also opportunities to become involved in weak lensing studies with Euclid.

Knowledge and experience of some aspect of weak lensing analysis or radio astronomy is essential. An interest in observational cosmology and the underlying physics driving the accelerating Universe is desirable.

This position is funded by an ERC Starting Grant (P.I. M. Brown) with associated research funds for travel, computing and other expenses. The initial appointment will be for a period of two years with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of five years. The starting salary will be in the range £29,099 to £35,788 p.a. depending on experience.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Michael Brown, Email: [Log in to view email], tel: +44 (0)161 3063913.

For further particulars and to apply for the position, search for job reference E&PS-00329 on our website http://www.manchester.ac.uk/jobs. Applications should be returned by 31st January 2012.
