Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Positions (2) in Observational and Theoretical Cosmology- Stony Brook University

The Department of Physics and Astronomy and the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) at Stony Brook University (http://www.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/ and http://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/itp/www/) seek applications for two tenure track assistant professor positions, one in observational cosmology and one in theoretical cosmology. Higher level appointments may be considered in exceptional circumstances. Preference will be given to applicants whose research is of relevance to LSST. These hires will be part of a new Center for Cosmology and Fundamental Physics at Stony Brook University, which will include researchers in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the YITP, and nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) (http://www.bnl.gov/world/). Additional hires in cosmology are anticipated over the next few years to expand this Cosmology Center. The current interests of the Stony Brook astronomy group, the YITP, and the BNL cosmology group can be found at http://www.astro.sunysb.edu/astro/research.html , http://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/itp/www/about , and http://www.cosmo.bnl.gov .

The Stony Brook Astronomy group conducts observational and theoretical research in cosmology, exoplanets, star formation, the interstellar medium, formation and evolutions of galaxies, novae and supernovae, neutron stars, and nuclear and computational astrophysics. Research fields at the YITP include particle and astroparticle theory, cosmology, quantum field theory, string theory, statistical mechanics, and quantum information theory. The YITP and the Department of Physics and Astronomy have a long tradition of interaction, and have strong connections to the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics and near-by Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Stony Brook Cosmology group is active in the ACTpol and LSST collaborations, and the BNL Cosmology group is leading parts of the instrument development for LSST and is actively involved in the BOSS and DES collaborations. Successful candidates will be expected to carry out independent research programs and contribute to the teaching activities in the department. The appointments could start as early as Fall 2014. To receive full consideration applications should be submitted by December 15, 2013. Interested applicants should apply through Academic Jobs Online at

https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/Ston ... onomy/3319 .

Candidates should upload their cover letter, CV, publication list, a three-page research plan, a one-page statement of teaching philosophy, and arrange to have three letters of reference submitted online. Applicants will automatically be considered for both positions.

Inquiries can be directed to Prof. George Sterman ([Log in to view email]) or Prof. Neelima Sehgal ([Log in to view email]).

Electronic submission via academicjobsonline is strongly preferred. Alternatively, applicants may submit the application materials by mail to: Nathan Leoce-Schappin, Assistant to the Chair, P-104 Physics Bldg., Stony Brook, NY 11794-3800.
