POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN COSMOLOGY at the Max Planck Inst

Post by Eiichiro Komatsu » September 27 2011

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN COSMOLOGY at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA)

The MPA is the major German institution dedicated to theoretical research in astrophysics and cosmology. It is situated 10 kilometers north of Munich on a campus shared with the MPI for Extraterrestrial Physics, the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory and several other research institutes and university departments. The campus is directly connected to central Munich by subway. The MPA has 15 long-term staff who work with about 40 postdoctoral researchers and a somewhat larger number of PhD students. The Institute runs a vigorous visitor programme and is housed in an attractive, specially designed building with excellent library and computer facilities. It also has privileged access to supercomputer facilities at the neighboring Supercomputer Centre of the Max Planck Society.

With Eiichiro Komatsu becoming a new director at MPA in Fall 2012, we seek applicants for postdoctoral fellowships in the area of cosmology. In particular, Komatsu will be building up a group in the large-scale structure of the universe and the cosmic microwave background, and their connections to our understanding of the physics of the early universe, dark energy, dark matter, and properties of neutrinos. Research topics include, but not limited to: thorough investigations of initial conditions as well as non-linear effects on the large-scale structure of the universe; imprints of high-energy physics and astrophysics on polarization of the cosmic microwave background; structures and evolution of the intracluster medium; signatures of dark matter interactions in astrophysical systems; imprints of dark energy on expansion of the universe and the growth of structure; influences of massive neutrinos on the structure formation in the universe; signatures of the epoch of reionization in various wavelengths such as near infrared bands and 21-cm emission; and strong and weak gravitational lensing as a cosmological probe.

The MPA is currently seeking to fill a number of postdoctoral fellowships intended for promising young scientists who completed their PhD within the last six years. These are usually three--year and exceptionally five--year positions. Salaries are paid either at German civil service rates (gross annual pre--tax income including health insurance contributions are currently in the range 40.000 EUR to 50.000 EUR, depending on post-doctoral experience) or through a tax--free stipend at equivalent take--home level.

Interested scientists are invited to apply electronically (one pdf-file please) to:

The Appointments Committee
appcom_at_mpa-garching.mpg.de

Candidates should send a full curriculum vitae, a publication list and a summary of current research interests and a statement of how they anticipate their research to mesh with current MPA programmes to this address by {\bf December 15, 2011}. No further hardcopy of the electronically submitted documents will be needed. Late applications will be accepted until the posts are filled. The candidates should also arrange for three reference letters (electronic submission as pdf preferred) to arrive by the same date.

The MPA is actively committed to equal opportunity in employment.
