Postdoc positions (up to 10) in Cosmology at new Institute f

Post by Eric Linder » January 06 2009

IEU (Institute for the Early Universe) at Ewha University in Seoul, Korea is soliciting several up to ten postdoctoral research fellows within one year to participate in an exciting new research program to explore and understand the early universe. IEU is supported by Ewha University and WCU (World Class University) project and partners with the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics. WCU is the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology project designed to upgrade research level of Korean universities by generously supporting a group of eminent international research scientists. It will continue five years until the end of 2013. IEU is envisioned by 2006 Nobel laureate George Smoot of UC Berkeley who led the breakthrough discovery of cosmic microwave background (CMB) by COBE.

Main research goals of IEU are following:

* Observations and data processing of CMB: Observations and unprecedented precision and test of the standard model of cosmology
* Important role in coming world-class satellite-borne experiments
* Understanding fundamental physics at the early universe including inflation
* Search for the origins of dark matter and dark energy
* Developments of innovative deep space technologies

Three of the fellows are supported by Ewha University and supposed to play a key role as an interdisciplinary researcher who may link different area of research fields in IEU, i.e.

* Active participation through data analysis and simulation for the world-class satellite-borne experiments such as PLANCK and DEM (Dark Energy Mission) and related ground-based observations,
* Theoretical investigation and modeling in cosmology and string theory,
* Development of space and advanced instrumentation for future observations which will have technological spin off.

The other fellows are supported by seven IEU faculty members through WCU grant and may concentrate on specific research fields of IEU. Applicants are strongly encouraged to initiate and directly contact a faculty member to discuss research projects.

The appointment is for two years initially, but can be renewed for up to a total of five years subject to satisfactory performance. The stipend is in the range of USD20,000 and USD40,000 per year depending on the research experience and qualifications; the costs for health care premiums are normally provided at no additional cost to the successful candidate.

Applicant should send (by email is required) preferably by February 15, 2009, a curriculum vitae, list of publications, a short statement of research interests and plans, and two or three letters of reference to the faculty member with whom he/she wants to collaborate or to: Prof. George Smoot, Director of IEU, Ewha Womans University, Seoul 120-750, Korea ([Log in to view email]) or Prof. Changrim Ahn, PI of WCU project, Ewha Womans University, Seoul 120-750, Korea ([Log in to view email]). Consideration of applications will continue until the positions are filled throughout the WCU project.

IEU is an equal opportunity/affirmative employer - all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, creed, color, sex or national origin.
