Post-doc positions at Cape Town

Post by Bruce Bassett » April 21 2008

Postdoctoral Research Associates in Cosmology
2-year Fixed Term.

Deadline: 30 May 2008

The UCT Cosmology and Gravity Group is a young but rapidly growing group (which has more than doubled in the past three years) comprising more than thirty students, staff and post-docs participating in many international research collaborations. The group has an active visitor, seminar and workshop program.

Within this larger context the observational cosmology sub-group is seeking a 2-year postdoctoral research associate to work in any area of numerical or computational cosmology defined in the broadest sense. This includes modeling, statistics, data analysis, simulations etc... Members of the sub-group are part of the SDSS SN survey and WFMOS project.

In addition the University of Cape Town has a Vice-Chancellor post-doc program offering additional positions, with the same closing date. Applications for the latter program are encouraged in any area of cosmology or gravitation.

The successful candidates will have access to SALT (www.salt.ac.za) and KAT (the South African SKA demonstrator) and will have priority access to the new Center for High-Performance Computing in Cape Town which is currently a 2.5Tflop IBM system which will be joined later this year by an IBM Blue Gene.

For more information on please direct any informal enquiries to Bruce Bassett (bruce_at_saao.ac.za)

Remuneration is set at R140,000 per annum which affords a very comfortable standard of living, a return ticket, and a R30,000 per annum research grant to support the research program of the successful applicant. Extensions beyond the initial two years are likely given the
very significant investment in cosmology and astronomy in South Africa.

Interested candidates are requested to email their CV, publication list and
contact details of three referees to

Prof. Bruce Bassett

Consideration of applications will begin 30 May but later applications may be accepted and considered until a suitable candidate has been found.
