Postdoctoral and PhD positions in astrophysics and cosmology

Post by Uros Seljak » November 17 2006

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Astrophysics and Cosmology
Schroedinger Senior Fellowship
Einstein Centennial PhD Fellowships in Theoretical Physics

The Institute for theoretical physics (ITP) at the University of Zurich invites applications for PhD and Postdoctoral positions in astrophysics and cosmology. Up to seven postdoctoral positions and a number of PhD positions are available. A successful postdoctoral candidate should be able to carry out a vigorous independent research program in theoretical or computational astrophysics or cosmology interacting with institute members. Postdoctoral appointments will be initially for two years with a possibility for further extension of up to two years (one year at a time). Postdoctoral salaries are in the range 84,000-87,000 CHF (67,000-70,000 USD). Research and travel funds are available.

A new senior Schroedinger Postdoctoral Fellowship has been established at the University of Zurich to support particularly advanced postdoctoral candidates to develop an independent research activity. These are expected to play a significant role in the overall scientific direction of the ITP, and are paid above postdoctoral level. These positions have an initial three year appointment and may be converted to a junior faculty position within three years subject to a successful outcome of an external review, for a total period of up to nine years.

ITP invites students to apply for Masters and PhD studies in theoretical astrophysics and physics at Zurich University. The PhD applicants are required to have a Masters or Diploma Degree in physics, astronomy, or related fields. The graduate student stipends are in the range of 46,000-52,000 CHF (36,000-41,000 USD). A new honorary Einstein Centennial Fellowships for PhD students in theoretical physics has been established to commemorate Einstein's 1905 PhD from University of Zurich, with the intention to attract world's best students to study theoretical physics in Zurich. Up to three Einstein Centennial Fellows will be selected from the overall pool of applicants to PhD program based on their scholarly excellence and academic promise. No separate application is needed.

Institute for Theoretical Physics consists of about ten faculty and permanent staff members working in the areas of astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics, complemented by about thirty postdocs and students. Scientific computing infrastructure is very strong with a cluster of 700 state-of-art CPUs with an advanced network. Zurich offers a very dynamic and international living environment and is consistently ranked as the world's best city for quality of living by Mercer survey. Further information and application forms are available at http://www-theorie.physik.unizh.ch/graduate/index.html. Applications received by 15 January 2007 will receive full consideration for positions starting in the Fall of 2007.
