The Cosmology, Particle Astrophysics and String Theory group at the Department of Physics, associated with Oskar Klein Centre (see http://okc.albanova.se/) invites applications to one fully funded PhD student position focused on cosmological distance measurements to map the expansion history of the Universe. One of the outstanding issues in fundamental physics and cosmology is the understanding of the accelerated expansion of the Universe, and the related Dark Energy, as discovered using Type Ia supernovae over a decade ago. Our research aims at probing the nature of Dark Energy through observations of very distant supernovae. In particular, we use nature’s own magnifying glasses, massive clusters of galaxies, to boost the observable flux of light from extremely remote supernova explosions. The observations are carried out at ESO’s Very Large Telescopes and the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands.
