The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in the extragalactic and observational cosmology group. The starting date is 1st April 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Michael Brown on the analysis of data from current CMB polarization experiments and the simulation, design and optimization of future facilities focussed on CMB B-mode detection.
The University of Manchester is currently involved in a number of world-leading CMB projects including the Planck, QUIET, QUIJOTE, LSPE and CBASS projects and is closely involved in the planning of next generation facilities. We are looking for a PDRA who is an expert in data analysis and/or instrument design and simulation for CMB experiments, but applications based on experience of other aspects of CMB research are also welcome. The post-holder will be based at the University of Manchester and will be expected to analyze data from one or more of the projects listed above and/or undertake design studies of potential future CMB polarization instruments.
Knowledge and experience of some aspect of CMB data analysis or instrument simulation/modelling is essential. Prior connection with the Planck project (or any of the other observational projects mentioned) and an interest in observational cosmology are desirable.
This position is funded by an ERC Starting Grant (P.I. M. Brown) with associated research funds for travel, computing and other expenses. The initial appointment will be for a period of two years with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of four years. The starting salary will be in the range £29,099 to £35,788 p.a. depending on experience.
